FIREFIGHTERS from across Southern Queensland have rallied to give residents in the flood-affected south-west a hand with their clean-up.

Urban, auxiliary and rural firefighters have been in Roma, St George, Mitchell, Charleville since flood waters began receding last week.

The Mitchell Fire Station along with many of the other businesses and homes did not escape the ravages of the recent floods.

Relieving firefighter crews will be seen throughout the town for several weeks to not only cover any fire and rescue emergencies that may arrive in and around the town but also support and give the local firefighter crew the much needed rest and down time they need over the coming weeks.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service community liaison officer Di Warr said the people of Mitchell and other south-west communities were very resilient.

"Over the coming weeks and months there will be a lot of work to be done both in and around the town," she said.

"If you are travelling or passing though these affected rural towns, try and stop, maybe lend a hand where required, spend a few dollars in the town and support local business."
