Firebirds must win at all costs

THE Queensland Firebirds are keen to prove round 13 of the trans-Tasman Netball Championship won't be an unlucky one.

The Queenslanders, the defending champions, take on Perth's West Coast Fever in Brisbane tomorrow and the agenda is simple - win at all costs.

No team that has won the championship has ever gone on the following year to play finals again, a hoodoo the Firebirds are keen to break.

The Firebirds are currently sixth on the ladder and captain Lauren Nourse said she and her players were determined to make the final four.

"The key to beating the West Coast Fever is that we must treat it as though it is the final," she said. "We must win to keep any chance of making the finals alive.

"Coming off the bye is always hard, but having a few days off has refreshed us and I am confident we can deliver the result we need."

Nourse said losing teammate Keirra Trompf to a season-ending ACL injury was certainly a blow to the team, but it had given the Firebirds added motivation to win.

The game is a sell-out but will be shown live on Network 10 from 2pm.
