BREAKING: A baby dolphin has died at Coolum's First Bay despite valiant attempts from authorities and the public to save it.

Australia Zoo, the Environment Department and Sea Shepherd representatives were huddled around the little dolphin under the shade of a make-shift shelter as they tried to save its fragile life.

But by the time the Daily arrived at the scene at 10.30 it was too late and its body was covered in a towel and taken it out of one of the small rock pools.

Authorities declined to comment at the scene, but a witness who asked to remain anonymous, said it was believed the dolphin was first reported found near the rocks at 6am.

"The authorities got here as soon as they knew about it, but there may have been a time lapse as they only start work after 8am," she said.

"There needs to be better signage up so people know who to call for help outside office hours."

Another witness said the dolphin had been badly battered by the time it was found and attempts to give it water and keep it alive were unsuccessful.
