Federal MPs to brave Bruce Hwy

A CONTINGENT of Federal MPs will put their lives on the line to tour the problem-laden Bruce Highway which accounts for almost 60% of all road fatalities in Queensland.

Wide Bay MP and Bruce Highway vocalist Warren Truss is leading the drive from Brisbane to Cairns to enlighten his fellow Nationals and Liberal MPs to the highway's flaws.

Mr Truss was recently appointed a member of the Queensland Government's Bruce Highway Crisis Action Group and spearheaded a federal version of the group.

The group will tour crash hot-spots and flood-prone stretches, including the notorious Cooroy-to-Curra run, the Yeppen floodplain and the Sarina-to-Mackay stretch, from Monday.

The Bruce Highway accounts for one in six road crash fatalities in Australia.

The most recent fatal crash was on Wednesday when a ute and semi-trailer collided at Tully killing two people.

Mr Truss, also federal Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, said the Federal Government should match the Queensland Government's Bruce Highway upgrade funding commitment of $1billion over 10 years.

"Making Queensland's main north-south transport artery a safer and more reliable route has to be a top priority," Mr Truss said.

Mr Truss will be joined on the highway journey by his Shadow Parliamentary Secretary Darren Chester, and for relevant stretches of the highway by MPs including the Hinkler's Paul Neville, Flynn MP Ken O'Dowd, Dawson MP George Christensen, Herbert MP Ewen Jones, Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch, Maryborough MP Anne Maddern and Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan.
