Fans pay tribute to coach at Adelaide Oval

THE game may have been abandoned, but that didn't stop as many as 20,000 fans (pictured) from descending on Adelaide Oval to pay their respects to former Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh.

The Crows had been scheduled to play Geelong, but both teams agreed to call the match off and share the four points after news of Walsh's death came through on Friday morning.

His 26-year-old son Cy has been charged with murder and remains in a secure psychiatric facility in an Adelaide hospital.

Walsh died at his home at Somerton Park about 2am on Friday from multiple stab wounds.

His wife Meredith sustained leg injuries and was released after 24 hours in hospital, while daughter Quinn is believed to have returned from overseas.

The 22-year-old, who had been in the US, posted an emotional tribute to her father on Facebook on Saturday.

"Hold your family close, never for a second take them for granted for that will be the second you lose them," she wrote. "I have lost half my family in a blink of an eye, nothing will be right with the world again.

"Wanna thank everyone for the support and love, will be home soon to be with my mother and to say goodbye to my one and only hero. x"

The club is expected to announce former Carlton and Essendon player Scott Camporeale as its interim coach.

The 39-year-old was an assistant coach at Essendon from 2007 to 2010, before joining the Crows as their midfield coach.
