Fanning farewells brother in touching service

SURFING legend Mick Fanning farewelled older brother Peter alongside hundreds of family and friends at a funeral service at Tweed Heads Memorial Gardens this morning.

Flanked by his wife Karissa Dalton, the surfing icon wore dark glasses as he arrived at the service.

Mourners lining the chapel's entrance ready to pay their respects to the elder Fanning, 43, who passed away in his sleep in his Tweed Heads unit on December 19.

It was standing room only as Jeff Buckley's rendition of Hallelujah rang out to begin the service, as family and friends comforted Mick and his mother, Elizabeth Osbourne, in a touching service which included words of comfort, tributes, an Irish blessing for Peter, a poem chosen by the family, and a pictorial of Peter's life, shown to the tune of the Rolling Stones' Wild Horses.

The ceremony took place as media reports quoting Ms Osbourne confirmed autopsy results had revealed the elder Fanning died from an enlarged heart, putting to bed earlier reports drugs may have been involved.

Peter Fanning is survived by wife Kai and three children Madeline, Nardia and Hunter.

Mick Fanning learned of his brother's death just moments before he was due to paddle out in the fourth round of the World Surfing League's final event of the season at Pipeline in Hawaii.

Commenting to his 705,000 Instagram followers after the heat, Mick labelled Peter a "hero" who helped him find the strength to keep competing, because that's what "Pete would want".

Fanning lost another brother, Sean, in 1998 after a tragic car crash.
