Pet stabbed to death in dispute

THE owner of a dog stabbed to death during a violent neighbourhood dispute on Friday afternoon has paid tribute to an animal he credits with saving his life.

Leichhardt resident Adam Turnbull said his family was recovering after losing their beloved rottweiler-labrador cross Dash.

The six-year-old dog was fatally knifed several times during the dispute after reportedly going to the aid of his master in Dampier St, about 4pm on Friday.

Mr Turnbull said while a passing Good Samaritan had rushed him and his dog to a local veterinarian clinic in an effort to save the animal, it had been to no avail.

The 17-year-old allegedly responsible for the dog’s death appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Saturday and is believed to be re-appearing in court today.

The teen has been charged with one count each of going armed so as to cause fear and unlawful killing of an animal.

Mr Turnbull said he had had Dash since he was a five-week-old puppy.

He said he was more than a dog.

“He was a legend,” Mr Turnbull said.

“He gave his life for me, no doubt about it.

“I have had so many messages of support on Facebook and people rocking up to the vets, people I don’t even know.

“It has made me proud of Australians.”

The 32-year-old said his four children had been inconsolable after losing their dog.

“The kids weren’t too happy on Saturday,” Mr Turnbull said.

“They cried themselves to sleep on Friday night.

“He stuck his neck out for the kids.

“He has always protected them.

“I knew from day one he was a protective dog.”

The father of four said he just wanted to get his dog back now so he and his children could farewell it properly.
