Factory collapse may claim more lives yet

BANGLADESHI police have charged 41 people with murder over the deaths of more than 1100 people in the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in 2013.

Among those charged were the building's owners - Sohel Rana, 35, and his parents - seven owners of factories housed in the complex, 12 government officials responsible for safety and inspections, the region's mayor and the councillor of the town where the factory was located.

A police spokesman said all faced the death penalty if convicted.

Arrest warrants were issued for six government officials who absconded.

The government had previously been criticised for the tardiness of authorities in laying charges.
