Facebook reunites friends
WORKING up the confidence to use Facebook for the first time, ahead of her 60th birthday, has paid of for Gympie’s Eileen Findlay.
Mrs Findlay said she had never wanted to join the internet-based social networking phenomenon, but had been trying for years to find her old school friend Lesley Sutcliffe, from New Zealand.
“Last year I found her on Facebook and she emailed saying she had been looking for me for 40 years,” Mrs Findlay mused.
After a year of catching up on 40 years of history, Ms Sutcliffe decided to come to Gympie and visit her friend, especially for her 60th birthday.
She made the journey on November 6 and stayed for five days, leaving just before Mrs Findlay’s birthday on November 11.
After coming to Australia in 1967 for a holiday with her boyfriend, who later became her husband, Mrs Findlay lost touch with her best high school friend.
“I always thought of her and wanted to get back in touch. I knew she had got married and I thought it was going to be hard, but she had gone back to her maiden name and was easy to find,” Mrs Findlay said.
She said the reunion was “fabulous”.
“We picked up where we left off as school girls. It’s amazing we could stay such good friends after all those years.”
She said her friend hadn’t changed much and she could see why they were such good friends in high school.
For her 60th, Mrs Findlay held a high tea party last Sunday at her home with about 40 guests; but nothing could top the high of reuniting with her school friend.
