Man corrupts kids

A FACEBOOK sexual predator has been jailed in Hervey Bay.

The 22-year-old groomed several schoolgirls in person and online.

"You overwhelmed and desensitised them with filth," said Judge Leanne Clare.

"You were a predator."

Hervey Bay District Court heard the man met three schoolgirls, aged 14 and 15, and told them he was 16. He then began a sexual relationship with one of the girls while at the same time sending hundreds of texts, pictures and Facebook messages of a sexual nature to the other girls.

He became friends on Facebook with a fourth underage schoolgirl he had never met, and sent her sexual messages, eventually succeeding in convincing her to send indecent photographs of herself to him.

But Facebook finally proved his undoing, the court heard.

The sister of one of the girls saw some of the messages he was sending her younger sibling on Facebook and police were notified.

They raided the man's home and seized his phone and computer and found a mountain of evidence, including more than 60 child porn images which did not involve any of the four girls in question.

The man was charged with 37 offences, including carnal knowledge of a child under 16, indecent treatment and possessing child exploitation material.

"This was not a case of teenagers chasing you," said Judge Clare, noting the man had gone out of his way to befriend the girls, as well as lying about his age.

He was sentenced to five years jail and will be eligible for parole in December 2013.
