Facebook begins trading

SOCIAL media giant Facebook began trading on Friday (AEST), with early estimates placing its value at more than $100 billion.

Now considering Facebook boasts about 900 million users around the world, it's fair to assume a fair number of people reading this owns an account.

So what are you worth to Facebook?

A website dedicated to protecting the private information of internet users claims to have the answer.

Disconnect Inc, a Californian-based company, has created an algorithm designed to calculate your worth to Facebook. You can get an explanation of how the algorithm works here https://fbme.disconnect.me/algorithm

In short Disconnect blends Facebook's macro information with the user's profile.

Disconnect's mission, according to its website, is to build "a platform to put you back in charge and let you decide who does what with your online data".

"We think your personal info should be treated with respect, that you should be the steward of your digital self, that you should own your own data," the website reads.

"But today, you're getting a bum deal. Thousands of companies and organisations are taking, analysing, and auctioning off things like the history of the webpages you go to and searches you do, without even telling you."

The company claims to have 400,000 users every week.
