Ex-NRL star a Devil
THE Gympie Devils will be in hot contention for today's pre-season final matches when former State of Origin star Chris Walker debuts for the Gold City.
Walker has more than 150 NRL games to credit and is looking forward to playing in today's game against Caloundra at Albert Park.
President of Gympie Rugby League Jim Bougoure, said Walker would be a great injection to the club if he decides to sign for the season.
"He is a very talented player and it would definitely boost the spirits of this season's team," he said.
"Hopefully it will give other players incentive to sign up for the Devils as we are still looking for numbers."
Walker said he was asked by current captain/coach of the Devils Kris Kahler to play this weekend.
"Me and Kris go way back having played in the Broncos and Titans together so it was great when he asked me to play alongside him for the Devils," he said.
After officially retiring from the NRL in 2011, Walker has since then focused on his business, Walker Brothers Earthworks, and hopes the business can take off in Gympie so he can commit to the Devils.
"Currently my business is centred in Gladstone so it will be difficult if I have to travel so far each weekend," he said.
"I would love to move to Gympie but I would need business here first.
"Gympie is in the middle of everything and I can definitely see my business, which focuses on earth moving and demolitions, taking off."
After playing six weeks ago at Caloundra for an all-stars match, Walker was awarded man of the match and said he hopes he can bring something to the Devils line-up.
"Kris said I will be playing either in the centres or on the wing."
Walker said he has also played with Devils forward Darren Burns who would be playing this weekend after several weeks off.
Bougoure says the game kicks-off at 4.30pm today and hopes the side can secure a win ahead of next weekend's first round fixture at home against Maroochydore.
