Foot star’s alleged swimming pool scam

Former AFL star Nick Stevens will front a two-day court hearing in August over an alleged swimming pool scam.

Fourteen witnesses will be called to give evidence during a committal hearing for the former Port Adelaide and Carlton player set for August 12 and 13.

Stevens briefly faced a committal mention hearing via video link in the Mildura Magistrates Court on Tuesday. He is facing 10 fraud-related charges, including five of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception.

Police allege the 41-year-old dishonestly obtained almost $145,000 to install swimming pools in Mildura but used the money for other purposes.

The offending is alleged to have occurred between June 27, 2017 and November 28, 2017.

Stevens is also charged with one count each of making and using a false document and a further three deception charges.

Magistrate Michael Coghlan confirmed the committal date for mid-August, adding he expected the case would be conducted in person after the defence raised concerns the hearing could go longer than two days if conducted remotely.

"I would hope that you will be appearing in person, with all of the parties appearing in person, but I don't know what's going to happen in four months' time," Mr Coghlan told Stevens.

"If there are not restrictions in place then I'd expect them to be actually running cases in the proper way, in the usual way, and that will make life a lot easier for everyone."

The court has previously heard "intention" will be the main issue contested at the committal, which will test the case against Stevens and determine if there is enough evidence to send the matter for trial.
