Meet Gympie's most-loved trolley-pusher
WHATEVER you do, you may as well be the best, according to grocery assistant Patrick Cole.
"Hi Patrick," said one happy customer as The Gympie Times interviewed Patrick outside the Gympie Marketplace shopping centre in Reef St.
"You've got a good one there" and "He's the best" were among other spontaneous comments from the customers Patrick helps every day.
A lesser man might just be a trolley pusher and leave it at that.
But Patrick is a proud and caring person who says he is grateful for a job where he gets to meet people and go that bit further in helping shoppers to feel right at home.
"He's very important to us," said his boss, store manager Bev Campbell.
Patrick looks out for people who may need a hand, sometimes helping them wheel their groceries to their cars or the taxis, even helping them load up the boot.
Earlier this year, the letters of commendation were coming in so fast, Bev took customer voices to the top and had Patrick named employee of the month.
After 10 years working at the store, under a few different owners, Patrick says he loves the job and loves meeting the people.
And it has led him to at least two important personal "discoveries."
One is the discovery that he is not as cripplingly shy as he once was.
The other is the Land Rover Discovery he has bought with his savings.
"I just try to help people. It's all been a real eye-opener for me and I've made a lot of friends.
"I like meeting people more and I must admit I've opened up a lot since I started. "Work has helped me achieve a lot of goals."
