Son on the run, mum on bail

10am: Police are still on the hunt for 25-year-old Jason Benjamin Hardie, who escaped from the Rockhampton prison farm on Tuesday night.

He was reported missing when prison guards completed a head count at 9.15pm on Tuesday.

Police urge anyone who knows of Hardie's whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

9pm, Wednesday. ONLY a mother's love could have prompted Sheridan Leigh Hardie to find herself in a courtroom dock Wednesday charged with helping her son escape prison less than 24 hours beforehand.

The 43-year-old Barney Point woman appeared as though she had recently been crying when she faced Rockhampton Magistrates Court on two charges.

The second offence was unlawful use of a red Mitsubishi Magna after she allegedly took the car without the owner's permission and used it in the getaway bid of her son, Jason Benjamin Hardie.

With the word "respect" tattooed on his upper right arm, Hardie did not show much respect for the law when he escaped from the Capricornia Correctional Centre on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old was on "the farm", the low-security section of the jail, when prison guards completed a head count at 7.45pm.

But prison guards discovered he was missing when they checked again at 9.15pm.

Hardie was in jail for car theft and stealing, and his full-time release date would not have come around until October, 2014.

His mother did not enter a plea to her charges, but solicitor Grant Ireland made an application for bail on her behalf.

Police did not oppose bail and Magistrate Barry Cosgrove adjourned the matter.

But if Ms Hardie is found guilty of aiding a person to escape lawful custody when she returns before court for sentencing she could be jailed for up to seven years.

Fifteen police staff and a helicopter were involved yesterday in the hunt for Hardie.

Rockhampton CIB officer-in-charge Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Moon said police were rapidly closing in on Hardie and they encouraged him to hand himself in or call Crime Stoppers.

Det Sen Sgt Moon also encouraged witnesses or anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
