Ergon denies ETU's projected 92 job cuts

ERGON Energy has rejected claims by the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) that a further 92 positions are to be cut across Queensland.

In October, the government-owned corporation announced it would slash 500 jobs in response to a falling demand.

But ETU state organiser Trevor Gauld said the number would be closer to 600.

He said Ergon had advised them of the additional redundancies, including 70 frontline positions, on Tuesday.

"There's a lot of concern," he said.

"The remote and regional depots are already understaffed."

Mr Gauld said a total of 31 positions would be cut between now and March, while the additional 61 would go before the end of June.

He called on Ergon and the State Government to be more "genuine and transparent" about the process.

He said the union was initiating talks and trying to get more information.

However, Ergon chief executive Ian McLeod said the target number of 500 had not changed.

"The current union claims are a misrepresentation of our efforts to continue consultation on efficiency measures and proposed reductions and redundancies across the business," Mr McLeod said yesterday.

"Since October, 135 employees have left the business as a part of that program."

Mr McLeod said employees who are covered by the Ergon Energy Union Collective Agreement 2011, and whose roles are made redundant, had the option to seek redeployment.
