End of the road for diving star

DIVING: Olympic silver medallist Brittany Broben has retired aged 20 due to an ongoing shoulder injury.

Broben, who was second in London in the 10m platform as a 16-year-old, was hoping to compete in Rio this year but had to withdraw on the eve of the Games.

Despite the Commonwealth Games being in her home city of the Gold Coast in 2018, Broben said she was told the injury would not recover in time for her to compete.

"I will always be so proud of the fact that I am an Olympic silver medallist, and while I did not quite get to Rio, being selected in the team made me feel like a dual Olympian,” she said.

"After the challenges I had had since 2013, just getting to a place where I was diving well enough to be selected for Rio was something I will always be proud of.

"But I really wanted to dive at my best in Rio, and sadly that was not ultimately possible.”
