Hat's off (and on) to the Gympie cup
GYMPIE racing's biggest day on the calendar is back for another year, so put on your best springtime threads and join the town for the annual Gympie Cup.
The Cup has earned its place as Gympie racing's social event of the year and indications are it will live up to its reputation today.
Punters should remember sunscreen and find shade, as 33 degree temps are expected for the region.
However, with the sunshine out, it's a prime chance for the fashion forward to take on bright colours and out-there headwear.
Leading the track-side fash-pack is Gympie Devoted Milliner Cindy Vogels, who styled today's front page models in season-worthy pastels.
The heat will also be on for ladies to keep cool but maintain the usual tasteful race wear that calls for lower hemlines and classy frocks.
But along with the standard glitz and glamour at today's races will be a sober touch in the name of late Gympie jockey Desiree Gill.
This time last year the popular racing figure won her second Gympie Cup. The proud win followed her 2012 Cup victory when she stormed home to claim her first ever Gympie Cup on galloper Harney.
Gill said at the time it was the "one race that frustrated me for years" and after winning it once, she cemented her name deep into Gympie racing history with a follow-up first place the year after on Troilus Fuse. Sadly, the jockey died just two weeks later at Caloundra. Gympie Turf Club president Spencer Slatter said today would be a "really special day," as a memorial to Desiree Gills will be unveiled at 3pm.
