Early start secures wins for vets
IT was a case of the early bird catching the worm on Wednesday for the winners of the Gympie Pines Veterans A and B Grade monthly medals.
Golfers to be showered in success cashed in on the advantage of the better playing conditions by teeing off in the morning, well before the rest of the field.
A Grade winner Greg Gallagher scored an impressive 65 nett while, not to be outdone, Perry Pike played well under his handicap to card a nett 66 to win B Division.
“Conditions were much kinder in the morning before the wind got up,” Greg said.
“I drove the ball really well today and the rest of my game was also very consistent.”
George Shores, who also carded a nett 65, was the unlucky A Grade runner-up, losing by just one point from Greg on a countback.
In B Grade, Ray Dunkley was the unfortunate runner-up after he also lost on a countback.
Winners in the ball rundown, which went to 71: Ken Wilkins, Col Smith, Brian Carroll, Barry Maher, Don Cappetti, Lionel Muir, Keith Johnson, Doug Sutton, Ian Horley, Gavin Jensen, Harry Bailey, John Baxter, Keith Stewart, Bill Swan.
NTP: Col Smith, John Ireland, John Kerwin, Sandy Linnane, Perry Pike, Bob Abbott.
Veterans will have their next game on Monday.
They will travel to Caloundra to play at the Greg Norman designed Club Pelican course, which is rated among the best in Queensland.
The bus will leave the club house at 6am sharp.
