Dudgeon Point poses danger to Great Barrier Reef

THE World Wildlife Fund has included the proposed Dudgeon Point Coal Terminal Project as one of several developments it says could result in the Great Barrier Reef being classified as "World Heritage in Danger".

The organisation's statement follows comments made by UNESCO at the weekend welcoming some federal and state initiatives to improve the health of the reef, but also condemning 43 proposed developments along the Queensland coast.

The environmental arm of the United Nations visited Queensland last year.

WWF Great Barrier Reef campaign leader Richard Leck said the State Government had ignored UNESCO's warning.

"Those port areas are defined to include areas that don't have development in them," he said.

"The State Government is using that as an opportunity to develop much more broadly than the local area.

"You've got Hay Point as an existing port, whereas Dudgeon Point is largely undeveloped but because it is part of the same precinct the state is presenting them as one in the same."

The State Government has said it is confident it will avoid having the Great Barrier Reef deemed under threat.

Environment Minister Andrew Powell pointed to a review of Gladstone Harbour and the putting together of a port strategy as ways it was addressing the report.

UNESCO will make its decision in June.
