Mum downs bottle of vodka then drives kids to dance class

WITH a bottle of vodka in her system a woman drove up the wrong side of a Brookwater street, repeatedly came to abrupt stops and nearly struck a cement truck.

All while her two children where in the back seat.

Nicole Pybus, 32, pleaded guilty at the Ipswich Magistrates Court to high level drink-driving, obstructing police, and dangerous driving while adversely affected.

The court heard on March 13 an off duty police officer saw a car being driven by Pybus was parked obstructing the road.

When he approached the car she slowly advanced the car before heavily accelerating and braking.

The officer approached the car and saw two children riding as passengers in the vehicle. Pybus then heavily reversed missing the off-duty officer's vehicle by less than 30cm.

Pybus then turned on to another road where she skidded and spun out of control. She returned to the road where she started driving on the wrong side.

She was forced to swerve on to the correct side of the road to avoid hitting a cement truck.

The mother of two eventually came to a stop at a bus stop where police attended to her. She told them she had been driving her daughters to dance lessons.

When asked if she had been drinking she told the police officers she was an alcoholic and "of course" she'd been drinking.

The court was told she had drunk nearly an entire bottle of vodka before driving. She blew a blood-alcohol reading of 0.232.

As officers took her into a police car she attempted to run and had to be restrained.

The court heard she was a recovering alcoholic who had "lapsed" on the day.

Despite her defence lawyer's submissions Pybus' driving was "at the lower end" of dangerous driving, Magistrate Bevan Manthey said she had endangered her children while extremely intoxicated.

She was given a three-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to serve 12 months of probation. Her licence was disqualified for three years.
