Drunk fisherman caught hwy napping

A TANKED-UP Rockhampton fisherman took the term "you bloody idiot" to a new level when he stopped his car to have a sleep - in the middle of the Bruce Highway.

The 58-year-old was over the alcohol limit, northbound and towing a tinnie when he decided to pull up in the middle of the highway near Bajool to have a sleep about 1.20am yesterday.

A passing motorist stopped and stayed with the man until police arrived about 2am to wake the Kawana resident.

He was arrested when he was found to be twice the legal alcohol limit and taken back to the Rockhampton police station for formal testing.

A North Rockhampton police spokesman said the man had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.104.

Officers say he posed a significant risk to other traffic travelling towards him from behind.

A Rockhampton Police spokesman said the man may have been fishing for the day.

He will appear in court at a later date.

Regional traffic co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Steve Hall reminds people who decide to drive under the influence of liquor that they face tough penalties.

Since January 1, 2012, there have been more than 500 drink-driving offences in Rockhampton Police region.

Snr Sgt Hall said the number of driving under the influence of liquor offences had remained constant over the past three years.

"Drivers need to understand driving under the influence is not only unlawful it is also dangerous and irresponsible," he said.

"Be reminded that random-breath-testing programs enforced by Queensland Police means you will be breath tested anywhere at anytime.

"Some people blatantly disregard the law while others are ignorant. You are putting other peoples' lives at risk."
