22-years without parole for Mokbel

DRUG kingpin Tony Mokbel will spend at least the next 22 years in prison after being sentenced in the Victorian Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Mokbel's long list of drug trafficking offences were read out in detail as Justice Simon Whelan sentenced him to 30 years in prison, with a non-parole period of 22 years.

Justice Whelan said he would have jailed Mokbel for life without parole had he not pleaded guilty.

Mokbel, 46, was the mastermind behind Melbourne's lucrative amphetamines market early last decade.

He sparked a worldwide manhunt when he fled Australia early in 2006.

Authorities offered a $1 million reward for information leading to his capture.

He was arrested in Greece more than a year later.

He then spent the next year fighting extradition to Australia.
