Drones swoop in to save farmers money

A NEW bird is taking to the skies over the Lockyer Valley, aiming to help horticulturists achieve better crop yields and save money.

With infrared eyes and a wingspan of more than two metres, the Ag Eagle is already attracting a lot of attention with farmers.

Queensland Drone Photography is the second state aerial photography business to partner with importers of the Ag Eagle drone, Falcon UAV.

Together they offer tailored aerial survey services to horticulturists, broad-acre farmers, orchardists and pastoralists.

Queensland Drone Photography chief pilot Tony Gilbert said the Ag Eagle was a specialised agricultural drone, purpose-designed for crop surveying.

"We usually fly quadcopter drones but this fixed-wing aircraft is a whole new capability, able to fly in windy conditions and cover up to 350 hectares in a single 45 minute flight with amazing detail," he said.

"It brings an economy of scale that we simply could not offer in the past."

The Ag Eagle will be flying at an on-farm demonstration in North Laidley on Friday from 9am - 11am at Gatton Laidley Rd.
