Drunk driver fled crash scene

A DRIVER who crashed into rubbish bins along a Station Road footpath about 7pm Tuesday night was allegedly four times over the legal alcohol limit.

A police spokesperson said the man, 36, ran from the scene of the crash but was located by officers a short time later along Lady Mary Terrace, near the Australian Hotel.

He was driven to the Gympie police station where a breath specimen was taken and he allegedly had a breath alcohol content of 0.214 per cent.

No one was injured in the crash.

The Wynnum West man has been given a notice to appear in Gympie Magistrates Court for driving under the influence of liquor.

It is unknown how much alcohol the man consumed, but the spokesperson said it could have been as much as 20 standard drinks with such a high reading.
