Driefontein is million-dollar babe

GAI Waterhouse's star two-year-old filly, Driefontein, firmed into $3.10 favouritism for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic after snaring the number three gate at the barrier draw for Saturday's $2 million sprint at the Gold Coast.

The solidly-built Fastnet Rock youngster is likely to start at even more prohibitive odds come post time - reports from the training track are that Driefontein has improved even further since her last start win.

That came on December 31 at Doomben when the filly showed a clean pair of heels to her rivals from barrier to finish post, carving out the 1200m in a sizzling 1m 9.38s, beating the good Snitzel colt, Sizzling by a length and a half.

That victory maintained Driefontein's unbeaten record - she debuted at Randwick on November 5 and showed early 'toe' and strength to score a hollow victory against her own sex.

Driefontein will be ridden by regular jockey, Tommy Berry, who has quickly developed into one of the best judges of pace in the business.

There looks to be a lot of speed in the race - as normal in every running of the Magic Millions - if Berry judges that a few others want to go mad in front, he has the necessary "nous" and horsepower underneath to take a sit.

Sizzling, which will have the services of another outstanding hoop who has a "stop watch in his head", Chris Munce, is the second elect in early betting at $3.90 on the back of his solid-finishing effort behind Driefontein.

But the Gold Coast circuit will suit Driefontein perfectly - she'll look all over a winner at the furlong and should be still in front when the camera snaps her photo on the finish line.
