Dramatic car chase case heading for higher court

THE case against a man facing a string of serious charges over allegedly ramming a police vehicle during a car chase in Mackay CBD is heading for the district court.

James Noel Harvey is charged with 22 offences in total including dangerous and disqualified driving, seriously assaulting police and possessing weapons and drugs.

It is alleged Mr Harvey, 27, was slumped over the steering wheel of his parked car and drove off as officers approached, ramming a police car on January 21.

The vehicle struck a truck and rolled on the corner of Milton and Shakespeare Sts.

During a brief mention, Mackay Magistrate Court heard the prosecution was electing trial by indictment in relation to Mr Harvey, who remains in custody after his bail was denied in January.

The means the case will be committed to Mackay District Court.

Legal Aid Queensland Defence solicitor Danny Yarrow said he had just taken over the case and would have a video conference with Mr Harvey within the next week.

The case was listed for committal mention in early May.
