Downs top drops get good raps
IT MAY have been a tough couple of years for Queensland and especially Darling Downs wine producers, but they're still coming up with the goods, according to Dylan Rhymer.
Mr Rhymer was chief judge at the Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland 2012 Wine Show and said there weren't the golds and silvers hoped for local producers, but the swag of bronze made an excellent consolation prize.
Mr Rhymer said the entries were down on last year, with many producers lacking the stock to enter their finest drops, but 212 Mediterranean-style wines were tasted and judged at the event.
The highlight for many was seeing alternative wines pop up into the mainstream like the pinot gris, which would often end up in a larger white wine class.
Mr Rhymer said it was refreshing to see lovely wines that would normally be lost in a big show taking centre stage.
