Don't walk into trouble this Christmas

One in three pedestrians killed in Queensland last year had alcohol in their system. HARDING FIONA

CAN you believe it's already December? I feel like I only just got through the backlog of Easter chocolate - just kidding, I ate it all in one go and was then terribly sick.

Anyway, I digress.

Despite what you may think, I actually love Christmas. Enter the season of silly paper hats and excess. It's the time of year when we catch up with friends and family or kick back with workmates over a few well-deserved drinks.

But do you know what worries me? Alcohol often leads to risky choices (and I'm not talking about that 2am kebab). One in three pedestrians killed in Queensland last year had alcohol in their system. It's a horrifying statistic.

While drinking may make you feel bulletproof, if you end up going head to head with traffic you will always come out second best.

There's been 33 pedestrian deaths on our roads so far this year, that's 33 families who'll be mourning a loved one instead of celebrating this Christmas.

So, by all means let your hair down and have a few drinks this silly season, but if you're walking home please make safe choices. Walk with a sober friend, don't try to race traffic, and always obey the little red man when crossing at the lights.

The best present you can give your family this Christmas is your presence. And while we're talking presents, I have just one request: please don't buy me chocolate.
