One of the first things we notice about a room is the window dressings, but it can be difficult to know which would best suit a room.

Blinds are extremely popular. They are practical and they come in different finishes and price points.

Faux wood blinds, especially in white, can add plenty of practicality and bang for your buck, especially if you're creating a beach-style home.

They are easy to maintain and, unlike the genuine wooden varieties, the finish doesn't fade or degrade.

Plantation shutters are also popular.

If you can afford it, plantation shutters in genuine wood (or painted white wood) are a stunning choice.

Roman-style blinds hang like a panel of fabric and come in a number of finishes, colours and quality.

These are ideal for living rooms and bedrooms, but are not great in kitchens and bathrooms where the fabric is vulnerable to moisture and stains.

For a dramatic finish, nothing beats curtains. Lush fabrics spill to the floor and, when gathered in an opulent silk cord, this style of window dressing is ideal for formal dining rooms.

Solar shades, identifiable by the UV-resistant backing material, are ideal for those outdoor areas that act as extensions of the interior of homes.
