Don’t be alarmed about smoke over Camp Kerr

QUEENSLAND Fire and Rescue Service crews will conduct a large hazard reduction burn this Friday at Camp Kerr.

The burn will be carried out at the south-eastern corner of the Department of Defence Wide Bay training area, backing on to Tin Can Bay Rd. Subject to weather conditions, it is expected to continue across the weekend and end on Sunday.

Firefighters will burn about 60% of the 680-hectare property to reduce fuel loads in the area in the lead up to the bushfire season. It follows a large blaze that took several days to bring under control at Camp Kerr earlier this year.

The control burn is likely to produce a smoke haze in the area and may impact the Tin Can Bay community.

Residents should keep their doors and windows shut and if they suffer from a respiratory illness, keep medications close by.

Motorists travelling through the area should be aware of the potential smoke hazard and drive to conditions.
