Do not raise GST:Qld Treasurer
QUEENSLAND Treasurer Curtis Pitt says the GST should not increase.
His comments come after the Federal Government released a tax discussion paper on Monday that suggested the country needed to consider ways to reform its tax system.
The paper suggested Australia did not rely enough on the GST.
It said about 70% of the Federal Government's revenue came from company and personal income tax.
There has been recent discussion about whether the GST would need to be increased but Mr Pitt said Queensland Labor did not support a rise or a rate change.
Mr Pitt said he would attend a meeting later this month with other treasurers and said he would go into it with an "open mind".
"But my starting point will be the position I hold," he said.
He also disagreed with the possibility of Western Australia getting more Commonwealth grant funding.
Last year Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey asked the Commonwealth Grants Commission to review how the pool of GST could be distributed among states and territories.
Mr Pitt said a proposal for Western Australia to get a substantial boost would be a detriment to other states.
"That is something we are not willing to accept," Mr Pitt said.
