Djokovic enjoys last laugh of 2013

NOVAK Djokovic has denied world No.1 Rafael Nadal the one trophy he has never claimed, beating the Spaniard 6-3 6-4 in the final of the ATP World Tour Finals in London.

The victory earned Djokovic $2 million and made him the seventh player to win the season-ending tournament at least three times. The others are Roger Federer (six), Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras (five), Ilie Nastase (four), and Boris Becker and John McEnroe (three).

After claiming his seventh title of the year, the Serb (pictured) said he was not only thinking about a holiday, but also planning his Australian Open campaign.

"This can serve as a great platform for the 2014 season," he said. "I'm extra motivated and inspired to work and get myself, first of all, rested and recovered in the off-season, and then work on my game and get ready for Australian Open."

Despite the loss, Nadal finished the year with an outstanding 75-7 match record and captured the French Open and US Open titles.

He had been desperate to add a first ATP World Tour Finals crown to his trophy cabinet, suggesting in the lead-up to the tournament that it should be rotated across different surfaces, including grass and clay, rather than always be played on hard courts.
