Discount chain looks a Lidl closer at Aussie market
SPECULATION has increased over discount supermarket chain Lidl's approaching move into Australia, after reports of talks with the Victorian Government.
The German retailer has long had Australia in its sights, registering its trademark here in 2000 along with hundreds of product names.
Now company heads have met with the Victorian Government on several occasions in the past six months, Fairfax has reported.
Lidl is already expanding on a global scale and announced its move into the United States last month.
The chain has been likened to Aldi, which has posted a 20% sales increase over the past two years and recorded a more than tripling of its Australian market share from 3.1% to 11.6% over the past decade.
In June, Lidl said it had "no current plans" to enter the Australian market.
