Diggers defeat Doon Villa in a hotly contested match

THE Gympie Diggers are looking to be unstoppable in the Fraser Coast League after dominating Doon Villa opponents 2-1 at the weekend.

In a physical game including various cards and send-offs, the Gympie side looked to be under control from the get-go.

Holding a majority of possession and creating numerous chances, the Diggers strikers had trouble converting these opportunities into goals.

The match proved hard-hitting Manthey said with Aaron Walker taken down by a flying scissor tackle from a Doona Villa defender with questionable judgment from the referee to take no action.

After numerous further challenges resulting in yellow cards, both sides were left with only ten players in the second half.

With the score all tied up at 1-1 after a superb goal by Joachim Klein, Diggers proved too strong with Aaron Walker knocking in the final goal of the match to seize the 2-1 victory.

Klein will miss this weekend's match along with coach Manthey after a dispute involving Klein purposely being kicked in the face by a Villa player.

Manthey said although there were mistakes he was happy with the performance.

"The boys stepped up and had a great performance," he said.

"We have a tough side and we can manage whatever these teams throw at us."

The team sponsored by Bebrock Excavations and River Dental will train twice this week in anticipation for this weekend's match against Kawungan.
