Diamonds need more discipline

THE Australian Diamonds' losing streak now stands at five games following the 55-51 loss to the New Zealand Silver Ferns in the first Test of the Constellation Cup in Invercargill. New Australian captain Laura Geitz knows her side must improve its discipline if it is to end that horror run and prevent the Kiwis going 2-0 up in the five-match series in the second Test in Auckland on Thursday.

"We know we have to be a whole lot more competitive under the ring with the penalties and understand that we can't be out of play," Geitz (pictured) said.

"If we get that right then we'll win more of the ball, but I thought there were some really great passages of play in defence.

"It's hard to win the ball off an attack end like that so we need to consolidate on the turnovers."

Despite the result, Geitz found some positives in the match after her side trailed by 11 goals before getting within three at the end.

"We're disappointed with the loss but it was a great fight back," she said.

The five-match series ends with Tests in Adelaide (Oct 4), Melbourne (Oct 7) and Canberra (Oct 13).
