Devils' Starr out for season
LAST weekend’s horror loss to Kawana has been made worse by injury to key Gympie Devils forwards.
Monster front row forward Adam Starr looks to be out for the rest of the season with torn ligaments in his foot and back rower Kane Ernst could be out for the rest of the season with a grade two tear in a medial ligament.
The injuries couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Devils who are clinging to third spot on the competition ladder and a chance of defending their 2010 Premiership title.
The Devils play an in-form Caloundra tomorrow at Shark Park and need to win to keep third spot.
Caloundra are on the same points as the Devils but have a better for and against.
A win would see the Devils go into outright third spot.
Coach John Greensill said the game was a must-win for the Devils.
He said the injuries to Starr and Ernst were a huge loss to the team.
“They have been two of our better players all year,” Greensill said.
“Caloundra are in a bit of a purple patch at the moment - they had a few players out last time we played them.
“They will be a different animal down there.”
He said Caloundra are a similar team to Kawana, who beat the Devils last week after the lights failed at Jack Stokes oval.
“They have very quick halves and will be hard to beat,” Greensill said.
“They are coming into form at the right end of the season."
Greensill said the Devils were still confident of winning but weren’t going to take Caloundra lightly.
“Whoever wins this game is guaranteed of third spot,” Greensill said.
“We need to win.”
One positive for the Devils is the return of classy centre Ben Ashford, who will add some fire power to the Devils' backline.
The game kicks off at 3.30pm on Sunday at Caloundra.
