Gympie Miners rise to challenge

THE Gympie Miners soccer team started its 2010 campaign solidly last Friday night, recording a 0-0 draw against Maroochydore.

Coach Mike Donaldson said his team had plenty of chances to win, but could not find a way past the Maroochydore goalkeeper.

“In the first half we were the much better team,” Donaldson said.

“The second half, Maroochydore kept possession of the ball better, but they didn’t really create any scoring chances.

“In the first half we were just attacking the whole time, but didn’t manage to score because their keeper played really well.

“We would attack down the wings and get decent crosses in, but their keeper kept on claiming them.

“It is good that we got off to a good start to the season.

“Getting points on the board at the start should give the girls a bit of confidence.”

Donaldson’s squad of 16 was cut to 13 before the match with three girls unavailable because of injury and illness.

This forced the coach to play players out of position and put a lot of pressure on the debutants, which they responded to.

“Two of our new players did really well.

“Jade Mahaffey and Jess Carlton were just brilliant.

“Jess was on debut and the Maroochydore coach awarded her the best player on field.”

The next challenge for the Miners team will be this Friday against Coolum in Gympie at 7pm.
