Rockhampton mourns the loss of Thomas the water buffalo

ZOO keepers and community members are mourning following the death of iconic Rockhampton Zoo animal Thomas, the water buffalo.

Thomas, who lived near the banks of the lagoon, sadly passed away of natural causes earlier this week.

Thomas' death was confirmed by Rockhampton Regional Council.

A post on the Rockhampton Zoo Facebook page was met with hundreds of comments by devastated fans of the water buffalo.

"It is with great sadness we say farewell to a Rockhampton Zoo icon - Thomas, the water buffalo," the post read.

"Thomas passed away of age related natural causes. Up until his passing Thomas was in excellent health. He did not suffer."

While zoo staff did not know Thomas' exact age, he was approaching 40-year-old which is a ripe old age indeed for a buffalo.

"He was a magnificent buffalo with a great character who will be remembered by all of us," a zoo spokesperson said.

Thomas arrived with chimps Cassie and Ockie in 1986 and came from Coolangatta Natureland Zoo.
