Greedy croc believed to have drowned

A CROCODILE that was found floating along the Johnstone River is believed to have drowned after becoming snagged on a crab pot.

Several Innisfail residents spotted the croc, believed to be at least 2.5m long, floating down the river on Wednesday.

Shae Rihari shared a photo of the dead reptile to social media after it finding it in the water near Innisfail Hospital later that afternoon.

He said the animal had a crab pot stuck to its mouth, and it appeared to have drowned.

A Department of Environment and Science spokeswoman said wildlife officers attended the scene yesterday, but were unable to find any trace of the croc.

Crocodiles are frequently caught in crab pots, after the predators try and grab the prey inside.

It was initially feared the Johnstone River croc had fallen victim to another illegal hunter.

A 4.4m saltwater crocodile was found shot in the head in the Mulgrave River at Deeral about four weeks ago.
