DURING my casual chat with David Campbell the 80s TV series Dynasty made its way into the conversation.

It was an unusual way to start an interview with one of Australia's most well known performers but it made sense.

Not only is my name, the name of a character from Dynasty, Campbell has taken a step back to the decade of big hair, shoulder pads and Tainted Love.

Campbell is currently on tour with his Let's Go tour which was initially inspired by the revolutionary 'second British invasion' of the early 80s which features hits including Let's Go, Shout To The Top, Come on Eileen, I'm Your Man and Tainted Love.

"I was going to high school in the 80s, so there were a lot hormones, angst and lots of hair.

"Is it strange that I take great pride in the fact that I saw Back to the Future at the Cinema?" he joked.

"For this album, I wanted to put a fresh spin on some dance-pop classics with a big-band brass and string sound.

"We went back to basics and jammed some of our favourite tunes from our adolescence, and I couldn't be happier with the result - an album of some of my favourite hits and party anthems - re-imagined in a way I know will keep my audiences on their feet."

Campbell admits that he started to listen to Wham and Hall and Oats when puberty hit him during the early 80s and said he always wanted to make a fun 80s album.

With 12 tracks on the album, Campbell said he recorded 37 songs.

"Some songs almost made it on the album; I always have a strong opinion on what goes on the album.

"It is all about the movement and the soul," he said.

One of those songs on the album is a version of Wham's I'm Your Man.

"I had this idea to make it a soul record and tackle that idea of gospel and blues."

The album has Campbell's signature fresh twist on some of the most exciting tracks to come from the early 80s.

Even though Campbell's voice is effortless and his talent for performing to a live audience, he freely admits that he has many times of creative struggle.

"I (recently) got in the car with my musical director and said I have no idea anymore. I had this out pour of 'I can't do this'.

"I am allowed to have a crisis.

"After that he told me to relax and so we started working on the next song.

Known for his energetic live shows, and selling out tours from coast to coast - expect nothing less as Campbell will perform live with a big band.
