Daicos puts the boot into Ablett

COLLINGWOOD great Peter Daicos has labelled Gold Coast Suns captain Gary Ablett ineffectual.

Daicos yesterday said there was no point in the 2009 Brownlow medallist - arguably the game's premier player - being among the league's disposal leaders when the Suns were constantly getting hammered.

On the Sunshine Coast to speak to junior players at the Maroochydore club, the Hall of Fame inductee also said the winless Suns' best young talent was in grave danger of burnout because the club lacked the experienced personnel to share the workload.

Ablett leads the competition's average disposals stats with 35.6 per game, including a record 53 against Collingwood two weeks ago.

Despite that, the Suns have lost all 11 games - scoring 701 points while conceding 1290. Coach Guy McKenna openly questioned his players' commitment after Saturday night's 95-point loss to St Kilda.

"There's no point Ablett getting 40 touches and the Suns losing by 12 goals," Daicos said.

"He's clearly not having an impact because they're getting smashed.

"Maybe (the solution is to) take a bit of the workload off him while giving someone the opportunity to play in the midfield a bit longer ... try and fast-track their development in that type of role. One guy can't do it (alone)."

The 250-gamer compared Gold Coast's younger brigade to cars that were on the way to being clapped-out.

But while he said the club should be attempting to recruit a handful of players with about 100 games under their belt, he conceded that securing those players was "virtually impossible".
