Daenerys actress rubbishes claims of misogyny in GoT

EMILIA Clarke has rubbished claims that 'Game of Thrones' is "misogynistic".

The 28-year-old actress - who plays Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO drama - hit back after the show was attacked with the label for its depiction of sexual violence.

Comments were made referring to a particularly controversial scene in which actress Lena Headey's character Cersei Lannister appeared to be raped by her brother whilst laying next to her son.

Insisting the female characters in the show are becoming stronger, Emilia told Radio Times magazine: "You start to see all of the women in the show accepting who they are and embodying that with such power that it's palpable.

"I think that's the beauty of the show: as women, we accept our femininity and take strength from it, as opposed to trying to hide it and behave in a masculine way.

"People have started to see Daenerys as a strong female icon."

Emilia's comments come after her co-star Sophie Turner defended the amount of nudity in the show as "necessary".

Sophie, who plays Sansa Stark, said previously: "I think, on 'Game of Thrones' - as much as some people would like to disagree with me - it's all very necessary.

"I mean, women in those times - medieval times - didn't really have a huge say in the world. They couldn't manipulate that well through their power because they didn't have a huge amount."

"I think one of the main ways that women can use what they have is through sex. They can really manipulate people through men's desire... So I think it is quite necessary that [the writers] show that aspect."
