Cutters to tune up against Sharks

THE Skills Training Mackay Cutters will use this Saturday's game (4pm) against Mackay A-grade side Souths Sharks at Shark Park as a benchmark for where the squad sits.

It was deemed necessary after last Saturday's game against the Northern Pride was cancelled after the plane they were on was struck by lightning.

Head coach Anthony Seibold said the cancellation was really disappointing but wouldn't be used as an excuse. He identified the local clash as crucial to rounding off preparations.

"We are really appreciative of Souths stepping up at late notice to give us a hit-out," he said.

Mackay Cutters front rower Lewis Balcomb is set to play his first game for 2012 this weekend.

"The game scheduled for last weekend was to be my first. I was really up for that and was a bit deflated when we didn't play. I am definitely looking forward to getting amongst it this weekend," Balcomb said.

All squad members will be in action this weekend as a number of local clubs will also hold preseason trials.

This will give all players the chance to press claims for selection in the Intrust Super Cup round one side to play Redcliffe on March 11.

"It is also great that all our players get a game this weekend. It will give us a really good indication as to who will be ready for next week," Seibold said.
