Melbourne Cup on way to Mary Valley

THE Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour is set to rattle into the Mary Valley on Thursday after a tour of Gympie tomorrow.

The famous 18-carat gold Cup valued at $175,000 is taking a ride on the Mary Valley Rattler for the first time.

The move is to enable the famous icon of Australian sport to be viewed by as many adoring fans as possible.

The train leaves the Old Gympie Railway Station at 8.15am on Thursday to pick the cup up from Dagun Station and take it on to the valley villages.

Mary Valley schools have been invited to meet the train and the cup at all train stops from Dagun to Imbil. Parents and friends are also welcome.

The special journey is open to the public and cost $50, including morning tea, and will return to Gympie by 3.15pm.

Valley residents cancatch a bus to Dagun, all stops from Imbil, to ride the train from Dagun to Imbil.

Cost is $40 and includs morning tea and a light lunch

Rattler president Tony Hallam was excited the Rattler would carry the Cup.

"This will be a great day for the Rattler and Gympie," he said.

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close to the Cup from Australia's most famous horse race."
