Crutchlow the raining champ at Phillip Island

MOTORSPORT: When it rains it pours. Cal Crutchlow had only just ended a 35-year dry spell for British riders when he won a wet Czech Republic GP.

The win in August was the first for his country in top-flight motorcycle competition since Barry Sheene took the honours at the 1981 Swedish Grand Prix.

The 30-year-old has added a second MotoGP win by triumphing at Victoria's Phillip Island, the beneficiary of series leader Marc Marquez crashing out.

Crutchlow admitted he feared for his own racing when the Spaniard hit the gravel in front of him at turn four 10 laps into the 27-lap race.

"I was terrified ... I broke really, really weak into that corner for the whole race,” he told Fox Sports.

"I knew it was critical towards the end of the race; I crashed there two years ago when I had 10 seconds behind me.

"I didn't want to make the same mistake. But I knew I had to keep pushing.”

The LCR Honda rider started the race second behind pole-sitter Marquez, who had already claimed his third championship with a win in last week's Japanese GP.

It was the first time Marquez had not finished a race all season.

Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) was second and Maverick Vinales (Suzuki) third, with local hope Jack Miller (Honda) finishing 10th after starting in fifth position on the grid.

Placings: 1 Cal Crutchlow, 2 Valentino Rossi, 3 Maverick Vinales, 4 Andrea Dovizioso, 5 Pol Espargaro
