Twenty20 battle set to continue
CRICKET returns to Gympie’s sporting ovals this weekend for the second round of the Gympie Cricket Association’s Twenty20 competition across all competitive grades.
In A Grade, the battle is intensifying after a scorching opening round last week.
Colts and Harlequins both enjoyed quick starts out of the blocks, notching stylish opening wins.
Colts defeated Valleys by four wickets, while Harlequins showcased its strength to bowl over and demoralise a heavily depleted Wests by a massive seven wickets.
Today, Colts and Harlequins will shape up to each other as the two winning teams from last weekend’s tussles. A hotly contested battle is expected.
Meanwhile, Wests and Valleys will lock horns to decide which team first receives a taste of success and to keep hopes of making the grand final on solid ground.
Wests captain Neil McKean said his team looked forward to the game given that it would be able to field a full team and have a fair chance.
“We had a major player shortage last week for the opening round and that didn’t help our cause at all,” he said.
Wests is lacking the firepower it had last year with the loss of a number of key players. Included in the list of players no longer part of the Wests’ fold is the big-hitter Luke Canning, who has left town due to work commitments.
“Luke was a really key player for us last season and losing him has left a big hole in the team,” McKean said.
While the competition is important, with points also going towards the overall premiership at the season’s end, McKean said it was a transitional phase for all the A Grade outfits. “There are school holidays and other sports finishing at the moment, so all teams are scratching around a bit at the moment,” he said.
“It’s a bit of a breaking in period to shed the rust, but we’re all after a good win to set the season up.”
