Cowboys snatch thrilling win after Thurston heroics

THE Cowboys' second half performance could be something they'll build the rest of their season on, as they steamrolled Melbourne to come back and record a 18-17 golden point win at 1300SMILES Stadium.

Brilliant halfback Johnathan Thurston locked up proceedings in the dying stages of regulation time, before nailing the winning field goal right on half-time of extra-time.

The Cowboys looked gone after the first stanza, trailing 16-4 after a spectacular try to Storm winger Marika Koroibete.

In the 28th minute, Koroibete flew to take a towering Thurston bomb, before beating the North Queensland playmaker and running in a length-of-the-field try.

Cowboys winger Antonio Winterstein opened the Cowboys' try-scoring account in the 13th minute, before adding another just past the hour to put the hosts back in the contest.

A Cooper Cronk field goal with nine minutes left gave the Storm some breathing space, but a late try to North Queensland's Matthew Wright set up the grandstand finish.

Massive back-rower Jason Taumalolo led the Cowboy's fight-back in the second half, running for a total of 246m.

COWBOYS 18 (A Winterstein 2, M Wright tries; J Thurston 2 goals; J Thurston 2 field goals) def STORM 17 (K Mann, M Koroibete, F Kaufusi tries; C Smith 2 goals; C Cronk field goal)
