Court considers control of Brexit
BRITAIN'S government has launched a Supreme Court action to determine whether it has the power to trigger Brexit, the process of leaving the European Union. The case aims to overturn a recent ruling that ministers cannot trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty without Parliament approving it formally. If the Supreme Court upholds last month's ruling by the High Court, it could disrupt plans by Prime Minister Theresa May (pictured) to invoke Article 50 by April and might give MPs opportunities to dilute her policies. The Government claims the earlier ruling was wrong because Parliament accepted ahead of the referendum that the Government would use its prerogative powers - where it acts on behalf of the monarch - to deliver Brexit.
