"We gave up our lazy Netflix nights on the couch eating junk food and traded them in for nights at the gym and being healthy. There is no magic pill, you have to constantly work hard daily."

Real talk: sticking to your health goals - never mind, actually achieving them - is hard. There are no shortcuts, and sustainable changes occur slowly, over time.

What can make the process easier is having someone accompany you on your journey, who'll hold you accountable, is interested and invested in your success and will be there to keep you (and you, them) motivated.

This method worked especially well for Lexi, 26, and Danny Reed, 28, a married couple from Indiana in the US, who have been together for more than ten years.

Resolving to makeover their lifestyle on January 1st 2016, the couple swapped their date nights at all-you-can-eat buffets for joint gym sessions. One healthy meal at a time, they have totally transformed their lives - physically, and by their own admission, psychologically.

Lexi started her weight loss journey on 218kgs, and Danny started his on 127kgs. Lexi since has halved her sized, and the pair have dropped 136 kilos between them - all in just one year. Lexi has also amassed just under 70,000 followers on Instagram @fatgirlfedup, where she has chronicled the details of her and Danny's journey.

"We gave up our lazy Netflix nights on the couch eating junk food and traded them in for nights at the gym and being healthy. There is no magic pill, you have to constantly work hard daily. We are now a more active couple and have grown closer through our journey," she wrote in a post.

"I made the decision I was going to change my life and this was my last chance to fight for it. Weight loss is not only a physical journey, but a mental one as well. You have to control your thoughts daily to stay focused and self-motivated. One of my favourite things about my weight loss journey is my mindset change. I am such a happier person every single day and try new things daily. My life has completely changed in every aspect," she wrote in another.

It's inspiring by anyone's standards - and speaks volumes about what perseverance and commitment can lead to. Power to them.
